Synopsis:
When ancient magic suddenly returns to his land, a warrior priest must protect his world from monsters that were once only legend in the second book of USA Today bestseller David Dalglish’s epic fantasy trilogy.
Magical creatures are attacking the capital city, seeking to retake what was once theirs, and no one is safe. Ancient cultists have cursed the highest members of the Church, turning them into twisted abominations. The only hope for a cure lies with Adria Eveson. To learn the cure, she must befriend an imprisoned cultist, and guard her heart against his seductive promises and twisted logic.
The fate of all races, human and magical, rests in her hands, and in the choices she makes. Should she choose wrong, only one person stands in her way: her brother, the Soulkeeper Devin Eveson.
I reallllly liked Soulkeeper and was looking forward to this with much anticipation. This is somewhat darker in tone than the first book, but it makes sense – the first book was getting darker as it progressed (I thought).
I’ll be honest though, I just didn’t like this one as much as the first book BUT it was still good. I just had overall less enthusiasm about it and I think part of that is because I didn’t care for the characters as much. For the most part, the characters are exactly the same with two new additions and I liked one of the two new characters. I was just less invested in them overall.
The number of magical creatures continues to grow, however I feel like the only ones the reader gets to know (besides Devin’s friends) are the Avenria, who are shadow-winged creatures that guard the world from the void. The whole ravencaller movement is centered around them, however not all of them like that. They are truly the most fleshed out of the supernatural beings that were introduced and they are pretty cool. There is some division in their ranks and not all wish to kill humans and this conflict keeps things interesting.
Overall, I don’t have much to say about this. It was entertaining and I’ll definitely read the next book but this lacked the spark (or perhaps the novelty) that the first book had.

Ah, I was the opposite.😂 I wasn’t too impressed with Soulkeeper but loved this one.
