Published: January 18, 2022

Publisher: Sourcebooks Casablanca

Series: Dark Olympus #2

Genre: Romance

Pages: 375 (Hardcover)

My Rating: 3.5/5.0

Synopsis:
He was the most beautiful man alive.
And if I wasn’t careful, he was going to be my death.

*A scorchingly hot modern retelling of Psyche and Eros that’s as sinful as it is sweet.*

In the ultra-modern city of Olympus, there’s always a price to pay. Psyche knew she’d have to face Aphrodite’s ire eventually, but she never expected her literal heart to be at stake…or for Aphrodite’s gorgeous son to be the one ordered to strike the killing blow.

Eros has no problem shedding blood. But when it comes time to take out his latest target, he can’t do it. Confused by his reaction to Psyche, he does the only thing he can think of to keep her safe: he marries her. Psyche vows to make Eros’s life a living hell until they find a way out of this mess. But as lines blur and loyalties shift, she realizes he might take her heart after all…and she’s not sure she can survive the loss.

If spicy retellings (and I mean loose retellings) based on Greek mythology are your jam then this might be something you’d like. It was a fun story for sure, but definitely more of what I consider a “junk food” read. I mean, just look at that synopsis! Eros is sent to kill Psyche, but he just can’t bring himself to do it so he marries her? And she agrees!? LOL

I’m not gonna pretend I didn’t have a great time reading this book, even though I call it a junk food read! It was such fun! There is so much ridiculous drama and the relationship between Eros and Psyche is pure fantasy. The sexy murder boy (known assassin/fixer) is overcome by the brief kindness of a good looking woman he barely knows and instead of murdering her on Aphrodite’s order he instead decides to marry her. And Psyche agrees! Though admittedly, they agree upon this charade until they can resolve the situation and the marriage is supposed to be a front, which is quite smart. But ridiculous. So of course they get married and have to make public appearances and convincingly pull off what amounts to a massively well done PR campaign. At first it’s all just a big show for the public and the media but they just can’t keep their hands off one another and it turns into a real, super dramatic whirlwind romance. It would have been slightly more believable if it didn’t take place over the course of like 2 weeks (or less).

I really liked Psyche’s character because she was a smart, savvy woman who could make a solid plan at the drop of a hat but circumstances prevented her from taking a reasonable way out of a scary situation. Aphrodite was a narcissistic bitch and groomed Eros to be her personal killer since he was a child, so she made a pretty awful antagonist, but in a good way. She was very easy to hate. Eros…… well, he too was making the best of an awful situation where he was stuck between killing a woman who showed him gentleness and kindness without expectation and his vile mother who was his only family. And of course everyone is smokin’ hot

Overall, if you’re looking for a smutty, fun romance check this out! There’s very little in the way of fantasy elements to the story – no magic, just a hierarchy and names pulled from Greek mythology – and reads more like a mafia romance. I listened to the audiobook and the narration was really well done, but perhaps not my preferred format for a romance novel! It can definitely make some of the spicier scenes a little awkward (AND IMAGINE IF IT CONNECTED TO A BLUETOOTH SPEAKER ON ACCIDENT LOLOLOLOL).
