Synopsis:
A young witch takes on burning new passions, simmering ancient grudges, and timeless magical mayhem in the last book of this delightful romantasy trilogy.
Lady Katarina Ashowan is used to getting into trouble, but her latest muddle takes the cake. A moment’s weakness in her attraction to Eric Reyes, crown prince of Daxaria, has landed her in an unexpected marriage with the man . . . just as her father, Lord Finlay Ashowan, arrives in Troivack to check on his headstrong daughter. As if figuring out how to acclimate her father to her scandalous elopement isn’t bad enough, there are rumors of dangerous magical plots afoot at court—with Kat seemingly at the center of them all.
For one thing, the devil is still prowling around, with dubious intentions as to Kat’s powers. For another, an underground network of wrongdoers has been spreading a mysterious and addictive drug throughout both Troivack and Daxaria. And perhaps most concerning, a villainess is hiding in plain sight somewhere close to Kat and her best friend, Queen Alina, hoping to use them to strike at the devil. Now it’s up to Kat—with the help of her kitten familiar, Pina, as well as her friends and family—to untangle the twisted web of courtly and magical intrigue before her hurried honeymoon is cut short by deadly disaster . . .
A pitch-perfect blend of humor, romance, fantasy, and mystery, The Burning Witch 3 is the brilliant and heart-pounding conclusion to the enchanting House Witch spin-off series.
My review for The Burning Witch 3 is going to be a short(er) one, as I’ve gotten way behind on non-ARC reviews again! Even though I read this over a month ago, I think this will still give you a good idea of my thoughts on the final installment in the series and the series as a whole. This will also contain major spoilers for the previous two books, so read at your own risk.
This picks up immediately after the events of The Burning Witch 2, with Katarina Ashowan and Eric Reyes newly married and wildly in love with one another. Finlay Ashowan has just arrived in Daxaria and the two are dreading breaking the news to him, but dreading even more so breaking the news to Kat’s mother, Annika. Not to mention, Kat is still trying to track down the devil to wring some answers from him. There’s quite a bit of interpersonal drama in all of Delemhach’s books, but this series has more than The House Witch series. Or, I should say, it feels like it has the potential to hurt more because it’s essentially following the Ashowan and Reyes families who have some complicated relationships going on.
There’s a decent amount of action, particularly toward the end but this is more people and politics than anything. I did love that Finlay and Kraken reappeared in this installment because I missed them dearly! Kat’s familiar, Pina, just doesn’t hold up to Kraken. This book retains the humorous nature of previous installments and I can’t help but to love some of the recurring jokes throughout the series. There’s also plenty of romantic tension and some spice, which I feel is also par for the course in this series. To balance all the happy feelings, there’s also some crushing moments and some bittersweet moments.
I enjoyed this series as a whole and thought it wrapped up fairly well. Overall, I definitely still enjoyed The House Witch series more than The Burning Witch, but this has kept my attention and my emotional investment is still strong. There will likely be another series focusing on the more mysterious of the Ashowan twins – Tamlin – and I will absolutely be reading that as well.
