First of all, isn’t this such an unserious title? I kind of like that Delemhach is giving actual titles to each of the books in the Ether Witch trilogy to differentiate them more than simply The Ether Witch 1, 2, 3. I picked up Confronting the Crafty Concubine right after finishing the first book because it was available and I can’t abide a cliffhanger if the next book is in reach!

Tamlin Ashowan has finally discovered what Eli’s magic is – she can shapeshift into an enormous cat. She also happens to be his familiar, which complicates their relationship even further. Tam, Eli, and Tam’s son Luca are trying desperately to get home to Daxaria without being captured but at every turn their efforts are stymied by one of the Zinferan concubines or the First Witch and it now seems as if even the Daxarian coven has been corrupted. Much of this book is spent journeying through the wilds of Zinfera, but it certainly kept me on my toes! As expected, nothing about this book is calm and if it can go wrong it will, but then the Ashowan luck always ensures things turn out all right in the end.

I loved that Tam and Eli are growing closer despite any disagreements that may occur. Eli is also growing more attached to Luca and you can basically see the little family unit forming in front of your eyes. This book is largely about Eli confronting her past, facing the trauma, and then learning to live her chosen life anyways. Delemhach does a nice job of having strong characters that are also caring and kind and who are for the most part, not brash assholes.

I once again had a lovely time reading this and unfortunately, I do have to wait for the next installment now. If you think this series sounds fun, you can jump right in but I think the books are best enjoyed when read in publication order, so start with The House Witch.
