Birds Are Trendy

Has anyone else noticed how book themes come in sudden waves? Recently it was the Eastern European fairy tale trend, before that was the morally ambiguous character, now it’s something, anything, everything BIRDS. Specifically ravens or crows, though the much less impressive and more irritating blackbird hasn’t had its moment of glory yet. I was going through book covers saved on my computer and they’re bloody well everywhere! I wonder if Stephen King is sitting back somewhere, laughing at the swarm of birds that are now gracing readers’ shelves across the world.

Let’s run through a few of the trendy bird books:

Cover- A Gathering of Ravens

A Gathering of Ravens

Good cover. I like the silhouette of the bird filled in with ancient city skyline.

Cover- An Enchantment of Ravens

An Enchantment of Ravens

I just featured this as my Waiting on Wednesday and this is when I was struck by the sheer quantity of birds currently present on fantasy books.

Cover- Blackwing

Blackwing

The bird is not subtly implied here.

Cover- Black Bird of the Gallows

Black Bird of the Gallows

Well that’s a cool title. Ravens and crows are seen as the harbingers of death, so they’re appropriate here.

Cover- Six of Crows

Six of Crows

This maaaay be where the trend began. Cannot confirm.

And here’s a few more books featuring our fine feathered friends. If I featured covers with feathers or birds that aren’t central to the cover design, we’d be here for DAYS.
